Baseline Water Quality Monitoring
In July 2009, KWF completed its 10th year of baseline sampling of the Kenai River Watershed. Every April and July since 2000, water samples have been collected at 22 sites from Cooper Landing to Cook Inlet. Our plan has been successfully carried out by having numerous agencies divide up the workload to cover the large watershed. Seven sampling teams each collect samples from 1 to 5 sites, depending upon how difficult the sites are to access. This way we can sample all 22 index sites in a single day. The water samples are then analyzed at a 30% discount by Analytica Laboratory in Anchorage. Our coordination and multiple agency partnership have combined to create a data set to use as a baseline for assessing the health of the Kenai River by looking at the concentrations of metals, nutrients, hydrocarbons and bacteria.
