| What
we're studying...
During this study we evaluated 10 sites along
the South Fork of the Anchor River. We were looking at the change
in river channel in the past 70 years along with possible causes
for these changes. We found substantial habitat degradation in three
locations.
Why this is important...
The findings of this study will help us prioritize
restoration projects on the Anchor River system in turn helping
protect the Steelhead and Chinook salmon.
How
this study came to be...
In December 2004 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service's Alaska Coastal Program invited proposal s for projects
that would advance the Service's Coastal Program mission to conserve
healthy coastal ecosystems for the benefit of fish, wildlife, and
people. KWF submitted a proposal for a grant to develop a reach-wide
in-stream assessment of the Anchor River. This assessment will provide
resource manager and local government agencies with the necessary
baseline data to endure that proactive measures are taken to address
channel instability and aquatic habitat protection and restoration.
KWF's proposal was one of the projects selected for funding.
